  • Pinch of salt
  • 250 ml water
  • Tortilla press

Description

Tortillas are a must-have for almost any Mexican recipe, and the best part is: they are extremely easy to make!

The origin of the tortilla in Mexico dates back to before 500 BC. The history of corn has such a deep root in this country that, in some indigenous cultures, it was believed that corn was the origin of human kind.

Method

  1. In a bowl, place the masa harina and mix in a pinch of salt.
  2. Add the water (make sure it is lukewarm) and mix thoroughly with your hands for around 5-8 minutes. If you notice that your dough is too dry in this step, add more water until you get the right moisture.
  3. After you finish kneading your dough, cover it with a cloth and let it rest for around 15-20 minutes.
  4. In the meantime, preheat your “comal” or your pan on medium heat.
  5. Start forming the dough into little, even-sized balls. But don’t worry too much about precision, the fun is in making every tortilla unique.
  6. Before using your tortilla press, always make sure to prep it with plastic wrap at the top and bottom to prevent your dough from sticking to the iron and forming a mess. It’ll also be easier for the tortillas to hold their shape.
  7. Place a dough ball in the center of the press, cover it with the top part, and with the handle, press down on it until it stops. Uncover the press, and carefully peel your tortillas from the plastic.
  8. Transfer your tortilla into your hot comal or pan. It will be about 30 seconds on each side or until slightly golden.
  9. Place your warm tortillas in a tortilla warmer and enjoy!
