Description

Horchata is and will be the type of drink you'll want on your table! Whether you want to accompany a slice of fresh bread, your favourite meal, or even on its own, horchata is a sweet, milky and fragrant drink commonly made of soaked rice and cinnamon. All across Mexico, this refreshing drink is also enhanced with a variety of fruits such as strawberry, watermelon, or coconut to make different styles based on the type of flavor your prefer.

Now, get ready to taste one the most iconic drinks in mexican cuisine!

Method

  1. Rinse the rice thoroughly and put it in a medium sized container.
  2. Rip the cinnamon sticks in two halves (you can do this with your bare hands) and add it to container with the rice in it.
  3. Add 1/2 liter of water to the container (or enough to cover the rice and cinnamon sticks) and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 12 hours.
  4. Once the 12 hours have passed, butterfly the Mexican Vanilla Bean (cut through lengthwise) to scrape out the seeds with a knife, and put it into the blender along the rice, cinnamon, sugar, and milk. Blend it on high speed for 2-3 minutes until all the ingredients are well mixed.
  5. Get a huge glass pitcher and put the horchata mix straight out of the blender in it, and add the rest of the water. Stir well.
  6. Put some ices in a glass, fill it to the top with horchata, and enjoy!

Author Notes

It is completely normal to find rice sediment at the bottom of either your horchata glass or pitcher, and even though it's optional to stir it every time you serve a new glass, we definitely recommend to stir it well to keep all the flavor in every drink.

Pro tip: wanna' try a grown-up version of horchata? Add a splash of rum, mix it well, and let the party begin!
