Dominga and Erica

Dominga is originally from the small town of Chamula, located in the southern mountains of Mexico in the state of Chiapas. Today, however, she lives in San Cristobal de las Casas, where she has a small stall at the local artisan market with her daughter Erika and her husband Miguel. In their shop, they sell both products that they make themselves as well as products from other artisans from around Chiapas.

The tortilla baskets are braided by hand and are made of reeds and cotton yarn. The baskets are typically intended to keep tortillas warm at the table, but they can also be used as bread baskets or as a nice decorative container to store small items due to their lively design, characteristic of the Southern Peninsula of Mexico.
