Salsa Macha Puff Pastry Twists

Cooking time:

  • 30 minutes in total
  • 10 minutes to prep
  • 20 minutes of cooking

Serves: 10 people

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet refrigerated puff pastry (rectangular shape)
  • 3 tbsp Vera Mexicana Salsa Macha
  • 100 g shredded Manchego cheese
  • 1 egg, whisked

Description

From the state of Veracruz in Mexico, more exactly the cities of Orizaba and Cordoba, originates a type of chile condiment very different from the classic Mexican table types. In its essence, salsa macha mixes and blends fried dried Mexican chiles (often the spicy árbol or smoky morita), garlic and optionally seeds, nuts, and spices. The mix is combined into a hot, flavorful purée and kept in vegetable or olive oil. We have used our Salsa Macha in these puff pastry twists – perfect for your next social gathering!

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees celsius. Smear the Salsa Macha evenly all over one side of the puff pastry sheet and add half of the shredded cheese on top.
  2. With a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut the pastry over in half lengthwise and cut into 2 cm strips crosswise.
  3. Take the end of each strip and twist in separate directions twice to create a twirly shape and arrange on a baking tray.
  4. Brush with the whisked egg and sprinkle with the rest of the cheese.
  5. Bake the twists for 15-20 minutes or until crispy and golden brown (serve warm). Buen provecho!

Author's Notes

If you can't find manchego cheese, try shredded mozzarella! The results will be just as good
